Social Networking, taken at face value, standing on its own, is wayyyy overrated! You cannot, I repeat, you CANNOT, put all your eggs in this basket. If you do, you’re destined to fail. BUT, social networking MUST be a part of your overall marketing plan. If you watched my videos you know how important it is. Social networking has leveled the playing field. Now anyone can get to know anyone else. There are no gatekeepers, no formal protocol, and the processes to reach out to big players in your industry are now much faster and easier. So how do you strike the perfect balance? Stupid Mistakes Nearly Destroyed Me You see, after I left my cushy marketing job to start my own business, I made every mistake in the book, and some mistakes that were so monumentally stupid they’re just too embarassing to mention here. In 2003 and 2004 I operated at a loss, and times were very tough on the home front. This was my low point. I racked up $100,000 in credit card debt robbing Peter to pay Paul. My 401K nest egg built up over 12 years: Gone. I held down a $400-a-week sales job cold-calling for a local ad agency for a while just to pay the bills. My health was deteriorating, I dropped 20 pounds and was suffering daily horrific panic attacks. Collection agencies were calling daily at all hours (if you’ve ever had that happen you know how cold and utterly ruthless those people can be). Yes, those were rough years. But all the while I kept working the “system” that was starting to piece itself together, burning the midnight oil and trying to stay positive until, gradually, I stopped working the system because… The system started working itself! Things started falling into place. Business picked up.
